Aqueduct at Phaselis

Day 9

Today was the vacation from the tour day. We all enjoyed cruising on a gulet on the Mediterranean. We spent the morning lounging, sunning, and relaxing. Our bodies and brains needed the rest after the active, mind-stimulating activities of the previous week. Some of the tour members climbed carefully down the boat’s ladder and slowly lowered themselves into the cool water. Others were not so tentative and dove repeatedly into the water right from the boat’s deck. Lunch was aboard the boat and included fish, salad and pasta. At one point, a small motorboat pulled alongside to sell us ice cream and the beloved Magnum Bars which sold out quickly to the disappointment of some. We were willing to pay their inflated prices to satisfy our cravings.

A few tour members went ashore to see the ruins at Olympus, including Pat who forgot his shoes and hobbled over the sharp rocks and through the brush.

        Phaselis

The boat left us at the ancient city of Phaselis where we wandered through the ruins and found our bus and Metten waiting for us near the aqueduct.

Our assistant guide Chadd took the second half of the group to the Turkish bath tonight. It was amazing to see the dead skin come off in "tootsie rolls." We all felt so clean and relaxed when the bath was over. We were given rose tea to drink before we dressed. Afterwards Neil and I stopped by an internet café to send and check email. We found a small family restaurant to eat dinner at. We had delicious chicken kebabs, a freshly squeezed orange juice, and a beer for about $5.50.
